Driving Directions
|
|
If you are driving, you are strongly encouraged to use a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to Mal Pais; in wet weather it will be required. It is on the southernmost tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in the province of Puntarenas.
Drive north west on highway 1 from San Jose follow the signs to the town of Puntarenas. This is about a 2 hour drive from San Jose.
Take the ferry from Puntarenas to Puerga it is a car ferry; runs every 2 hours between 6 am and 4pm and costs about 10 dollars each way. This is about a 1.5 hour ride.
Drive to Cobano the paved road ends at Cobano and from there is quite rough and slow to Mal Pais.
This is about a 2 hour drive in dry conditions.
When the road ends in Mal Pais turn left to the end of the road.
The total travel time is about one day.
The distance from Liberia Airport 300 miles, and due to bad road conditions travel from Liberia can take up to 5 hours. The distance from San Jose Airport is 250 miles, and if traveling by road, a ferry transfer is required (take Paquera Ferry from the town of Puntarenas). Depending on ferry schedule, travel from San Jose can take up to 4 hours. Road conditions in general are poor.
